Fish is a wonderful food that has been known to man since his cave-dwelling days! It is one of the most widely available sources of animal protein, and studies have conclusively proved the presence of many other enriching nutrients required in our diet. Many communities swear by fish, and cannot do without a delectable piece of fish fry or a cup of steaming fish curry to go with their daily meals! And one of the best known cuisines that uses fish to great advantage is Thai. Here is an easy recipe that infuses Thai flavours in a drool-worthy fish dish that is nutritious, diet-friendly, and gets done in a jiffy. Presenting, the Thai Lemon Fish!
Fish – any fish of your choice, steamed. I used tilapia.
For the sauce –
- Thai Lemon Grass – chopped
- Red chillies – chopped (preferably Thai red chillies)
- Garlic – finely chopped
- Lemon juice – to taste
- Kaffir Lime Leaves – finely chopped
- Cilantro – finely chopped
- Chopped nuts of you choice
** Optional Ingredients for Non Dieters **
– Soy Sauce (adds a good savory flavor)
– Coconut sugar (it turns it into a sweet, savory and spicy sauce), but I didn’t add it to my version. Feel free to add according to your macros.
Please note: I have not mentioned any specific amounts, and you can vary the amounts depending upon how much fish you’ve got. Typically, the sauce ingredients all have strong flavors, so you may not need to add too much of any of them.
Method for sauce:
- In a pan, boil a quarter cup of water, add chopped lemon grass and boil till it softens. A good assumption would be that every 100 gms of fish needs atleast 4 tbsps of the final sauce, so take water accordingly. A little more if you like it more saucy.
- If you are a non-dieter, you can add the optional ingredients now (soy sauce and coconut sugar), and allow to simmer and reduce for 2-3 minutes. Like I said, I skipped them for my recipe (and image).
- Remove sauce from flame and add lemon juice, kaffir lime leaves, garlic, cilantro and finely chopped red chillies.
- Pour the sauce over your steamed fish, and serve hot.
1) Add lemon after removing the sauce from flame as it gets bitter otherwise.
2) After adding sauce over steamed fish, let it rest for about 5 minutes. That allows the fish soak up all the flavors of the sauce.
